Falling In Love With Hominids by Nalo Hopkinson [Review]

Falling in Love with Hominids presents over a dozen years of Hopkinson’s new, uncollected fiction, much of which has been unavailable in print. Her singular, vivid tales, which mix the modern with Afro-Carribean folklore, are occupied by creatures unpredictable and strange: chickens that breathe fire, adults who eat children, and spirits that haunt shopping malls.

2016 Reading Goals + January TBR [Monthly Roundup]

I don’t really make New Years resolutions, but for about 4 years now, I’ve been making little goals for myself. I’ve got stuff like watch at least 100 movies, read at least 80 graphic novels/trade comics, etc. I didn’t accomplish many of them, but I read more books than previous years!! And I finally got my degree. So I think that makes up for it.

My reading goals of 2015 were to read at least 55 ‘new to me’ books and I accomplished that AND managed to make up for the books I didn’t read for my goal of previous years!!!

In 2016 I’ll be starting my Masters degree in the second half of the year, so I can’t imagine I’ll have that much time to read. 😭 That’s why I’ll lower my goal to 40 books. For the first half of the year I’ll be here in Singapore doing a 5 month long internship at the national paper, so I think it’ll be easier to get the bulk of my reading done while I’m here.

I also want to:

BUT FOR JANUARY! My TBR, (which is something I rarely ever do because I like to go freely go from book to book, cause I never know what I’ll be in the mood for!) is built up of a pile of short books, all shorter than 200 pages. I want to get through as many as I can of them in the first month so I can sneakily add numbers to my book goal. Not to cheat per se, but so I guess I feel less disappointment later in the year if I’m not even close to my goal! Don’t judge me ok. They’re still books. Just… not novel length….

I probably won’t even manage them all, but I’ll damn well try.

TOP TO BOTTOM

I KNOW IT’S A LOT OF BOOKS TO WANT TO READ. BUT I GOTTA TRY.

Hayao Miyazaki’s 50 Favourite Books [Literary Lists]

I found this list a while ago from Le Petit Prince‘s official website, which is quite coincidental as at the moment there are themed decorations for Christmas in Singapore from the book!

The prettiest seasonal decorations in SG this year are #LePetitPrince themed and hiding inside Wheelock. 👑🚀✨

A post shared by tamara c. 👽🖖💜✨🚀 (@happentobeshort) on

Hayao Miyazaki’s affection for the author of The Little Prince, pilot and writer, is at the heart of his movies. Many aerial scenes and flying machines that came out of his imagination are inspired by the life and work of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (Porco Rosso, Castle in the Sky, From Up on Poppy Hill). The director, a recognized specialist of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, has also prefaced and illustrated the Japanese edition of Night Flight.

This list of his resulted in an exhibition in 2011 which also included handwritten notes where he wrote about his feelings in relation to each book he chose.

#DiverseDecember: In Which Diversity Is Not A Myth [Literary Lists]

Recently I noticed a hashtag going around twitter, #DiverseDecember. Turns out it’s a celebration of books by Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic writers (aka BAME), for this month!

It even has it’s own twitter account, which you can find @DiverseDecember!!! The account mainly retweets posts with the hashtag, so it’s worth having a look through if you want some diverse books to add to your to-read list, or if you still haven’t bought a Christmas or Hanukkah gift.

The original poster of this post has now deactivated their account, so I can’t credit them for their work. 😡 I just thought it was such a great master post of diverse spookies and creatures that more people had to know about it!!

Under the Read More, there is a MASSIVE list of links showing you the immense diversity that exists for fantasy creatures! From Inuit mythology to Filipinx Ghouls, Persian fairies to Nigerian water spirits.

DIVERSITY IS NOT A MYTH FOLKS!

EVEN IN MYTHOLOGY ITSELF!!

GO FORTH AND DIVERSIFY YOUR FANTASIES AND NIGHTMARES!!!

IT’S HANUKKAH TIME Y’ALL [Book Tag]

So I live in Singapore. Which is in Asia. Which does not have a lot of Jews. And most certainly not enough to warrant decorations all over the city-state to celebrate Hanukkah.

Which blows because as a kid I wished that just one place would have Hanukkah decorations. Hell, even some blue and gold lights somewhere would have been nice! BUT NO. It was all red and green and Santa this, reindeer that. Not even a few electric candles with blue fairy lights near or around them. 😒

THIS GOES OUT TO ALL MY FELLOW YIDS WHO RESENT BEING LEFT OUT IN THE SEASONAL MONTH OF DECEMBER.

💙🔯💛🔯💙🍩🔥🍩💙🔯💛🔯💙

AND WHO DON’T WANT TO ENGAGE IN EVERY SINGLE CHRISTMAS EVENT BECAUSE IT’S NOT EVEN THEIR HOLIDAY.

💙🔯💛🔯💙🍩🔥🍩💙🔯💛🔯💙

HAPPY HANUKKAH-CHANUKAH-HANNUKAH-THE ONE WITH THE CANDLES!!!

Monthly Roundup ↪ Nov ☔

This November I had quite a terrible first couple of weeks that involved having surgery and much bed-rest that made me very bored. And most of my friends that are in town are busy a lot of the time which leaves me feeling quite lonely. But thankfully my local library lets me take out something like 20-50 books, which is RIDICULOUS but I’m not complaining. 😎

It’s also now “Winter” time in Singapore which means, heavy and loud thunderstorms, which is also very ideal weather for staying in bed, under the covers, with a snack at my right hand and a book in my left.
