This is really all that needs to be said about what happened this month:
“What has been the biggest change for you in 2016??”
“I’m now in the 25 – 30 age category on forms, so I’m like the crypt keeper basically.”

THE RABBIT BACK LITERATURE SOCIETY
by Pasi Ilmari Jääskeläinen
[TRANSLATED: Lola Rogers] 🌨📕🐰
I really really REALLY wanted to enjoy this book. HONEST!! The concept was really cool and the book cover was gorgeous and it even sounded like it would be right up my alley! But alas it was not. There was just something missing. I’m not sure what but it wasn’t as creepy or ‘fantastical’ enough for me, I mean based on the plot I was expecting.
That being said, the writing was good and I did enjoy reading it. Even though it did take me a while to get through the book when I maybe should have just given up.. But I wanted to believe that it was gonna make an amazing turnaround in the last third of the book. It didn’t. OH WELL.
HELLBOY: THE ALL SEEING EYE
by Mark Morris 👁👿🗿
I LOVE HELLBOY A LOT. I AM A SUCKER FOR HELLBOY RELATED ANYTHING!!!! Hellboy comics were probably my gateway drug to get me into reading more ‘gothic’ literature and the like.
This book totally felt like a Hellboy comic but in novel form!!! Which is exactly what I want because at the end of the day, these books are no different to FanFic that people write online. Except that it is published by Dark Horse. Which means someone got paid to do this. WHICH MEANS IT BETTER BE GOOD.
I especially love that they didn’t follow the route of the movies in trying to make Liz and Hellboy a ‘thing’. That really irked me in the movies. And even though it never became a thing in the comics, I was hoping it wouldn’t be a thing in the novels either!! I mean, you never know ok. It’s a different medium after all!!!!!!! But luckily it wasn’t. The trio were as true to the comics as I felt they could be.
Totally worth reading if you’re a Hellboy/BPRD dweeb like myself. Or have always been interested in the comics but never picked them up. The novels are always a fun place to start!
MEDUSA’S GAZE & THE VAMPIRES BITE: THE SCIENCE OF MONSTERS
by Matt Kaplan 🐲🏛👹
This was pretty damn fun, I must say. I went through phases of not liking it that much and then loving it, and then finally to just enjoying it, while reading. It seems that when you want to get to the exact ‘conception’ of some of these ancient monsters, the answer is almost always FOSSILS!! DINOSAURS!!!! TAR PITS!!!!!!! Which I guess makes a lot of sense if you think about it. At the end of the day, these creatures are not real so there really is no ‘moment of conception’ or anyway of proving how they really came about. It was pretty fun to read though. So uh, check it out if you love spooky creatures and stuff. From Chimeras to Golems and Vampires to Aliens.
THE BATTLE FOR WONDLA
[THE SEARCH FOR WONDLA #3]
by Tony DiTerlizzi 🤖🌳✨
What a lovely ending to an awesome series!!! AHHH WHAT A GOOD. Not much to say other than I am very satisfied with the ending even though it means the series is officially over and done with. I feel like all the plots were tied up and finished and Eva got what she deserved in the best way possible. I also really loved how after the story ends we get to see little snippets of the future in chunks of years as time goes on. Which then also made me want to know what happened to that one kid at the very very end that is wayyy way way in the future!!! HELLO MR TONY PLS WRITE A NOVELLA OR SOMETHING ABOUT THIS KTHX!!!
[LOIS LANE #1]
by Gwenda Bond 💻🎮📰
AHH! This was SO MUCH FUN!!! It was a bit “teeny bopper” or whatever is a term the Youth use these days, and that’s why it’s not 5 out of 5, but also it’s not like I didn’t expect that. Fallout is obviously targeted at younger kids who are interested in superheroes from the films, but are probably intimidated by comics or not interested at all. ANYWAY!
I really enjoyed what essentially was a Lois Lane/Superman high school AU, which as all fanfic veterans know to be one of THE most common AUs. And also IN MY OPINION one of the more fun ‘constants’. I LOVED LOVED LOVED how Lois and Clark spoke over instant messengers and met over like, a real life X-Files messenger board. Also I’m not sure why I kept picturing Sam Lane to look like that general guy from Atlantis…
Yeah I’m not really sure why either. If you love your comic ladies as much as I’m sure y’all do, and you also enjoy YA books, you gotta read this. I read this quite literally in one night over a few hours. WORTH IT.
THIS CENSUS TAKER
by China Miéville ✍🏔😨
I sadly did not enjoy this as much as I hoped I would. I love China’s work so I was really excited for this to come out, and the physical book itself is really pretty too! BUT ALAS, the insides were not as great. I mean it’s not TERRIBLE, it just wasn’t what I hoped it was gonna be like.
But I guess this is a testament to his writing skill, because even though I didn’t like this, and even had trouble understanding what was going on, I still enjoyed reading it because he has such a fantastical way of writing that you just get lured in even if you have no idea what is going on.
Kinda like this:
