Monthly Roundup ↪ Nov😴

I HAVE READ SO LITTLE THIS MONTH. WOW. SURPRISE SURPRISE… To be fair on myself, this month has been incredibly busy – I’ve been travelling out of town on the weekends to see friends, going to concerts, finishing assignments, classes have been long, I’ve been tired, etc etc.

LYF IS TUFF.

MONSTERS
by Emerald Fennell 🌊💀🏖

I had a ‘Talented Mr Ripley’ moment with this book. That means I did not expect it to get as disturbing and creepy as it did. I don’t wanna say anymore at risk of giving anything away. I gave it 3 out of 5 not because I didn’t enjoy it that much, but mostly because it weirded me out so much….!!! I’m not really into these kinds of creepy books. ANYWAY, if you enjoy reading about disturbing murders and creepy small towns, this is for you.

AND I DARKEN
[THE CONQUERERS SAGA #1]
by Kiersten White ⚔☪🏰

So this book was a lot of fun!!! Long story short: if Vlad the Impaler was actually a girl and this is her ‘origin’ story of sorts. The book blurb basically explains it all so I’m not gonna repeat what’s there already, but what I WILL say is that it is a very fun and addicting read, especially if you love historical fiction. But maybe don’t expect it to be entirely accurate. I mean, it IS an alternate history novel, and also it’s complete fiction but “inspired” by real history. I initially picked it up because anything related to Vlad the Impaler and the ‘myth of Dracula’ or rather the Dracul’s of Romania, is right up my alley. Well enough that I’ll take a look at it. I didn’t know this was going to be a series when I picked it up and on finishing it I don’t think I’ll read the rest. I’m content with what I got from this one and I’m not invested enough in the characters to want to read more.

A Daring Sacrifice by Jody Hedlund [Review]

For three years, the Cloaked Bandit has terrorized Wessex, robbing the nobility by knife-point and a well-placed arrow. But little dos anyone know, this bandit is in fact Juliana Wessex, the rightful ruler of the land and a girl her tyrannical uncle—the current Lord Wessex—believes was killed along with her father.

Juliana has become skilled at hiding from Lord Wessex in the forest, using her stolen goods to provide food and shelter to the peasants her uncle has taxed into poverty. But when she robs Collin Goodrich, her red hair betrays her true identity. Lord Collin remembers Juliana from their childhood—and challenges her to stay on his estate for a week in hopes she will leave her thieving ways and become a proper lady once more. Juliana is intrigued by Collin and his charms, but only time will tell if he can overcome her distaste of the nobility—as well as win her heart.

Also I’m in Singapore which means biblical thunderstorms and flash floods like 4/5 times a week. Which is really nice when you’re hiding indoors so you don’t get wet in what is warm rain that sometimes can feel like pee. “Winter” in the tropics of South East Asia is weird. We have snow themed  decorations everywhere, yet we are either sweating like mad or hoping the torrential rain won’t delay the bus system.

IT’S HANUKKAH TIME Y’ALL [Book Tag]

So I live in Singapore. Which is in Asia. Which does not have a lot of Jews. And most certainly not enough to warrant decorations all over the city-state to celebrate Hanukkah.

Which blows because as a kid I wished that just one place would have Hanukkah decorations. Hell, even some blue and gold lights somewhere would have been nice! BUT NO. It was all red and green and Santa this, reindeer that. Not even a few electric candles with blue fairy lights near or around them. 😒

THIS GOES OUT TO ALL MY FELLOW YIDS WHO RESENT BEING LEFT OUT IN THE SEASONAL MONTH OF DECEMBER.

💙🔯💛🔯💙🍩🔥🍩💙🔯💛🔯💙

AND WHO DON’T WANT TO ENGAGE IN EVERY SINGLE CHRISTMAS EVENT BECAUSE IT’S NOT EVEN THEIR HOLIDAY.

💙🔯💛🔯💙🍩🔥🍩💙🔯💛🔯💙

HAPPY HANUKKAH-CHANUKAH-HANNUKAH-THE ONE WITH THE CANDLES!!!

Esther by Rebecca Kanner [Review] UK Release: Dec 28 2015

A glittering Persian king has a vast empire that reaches farther than where the sun meets the horizon. He is bathed in riches and commands a frightening military force. He possesses power beyond any other mortal man and rules his kingdom as a god. Anything he desires, he has…

A Jewish girl is ripped from her hut by the king’s brutish warriors and forced to march across blistering, scorched earth to the capitol city. Trapped for months in the splendid cage of the king’s palace, she must avoid the ire of the king’s concubines and eunuchs all while preparing for her one night with the king. Soon the fated night arrives, and she does everything in her power to captivate the king and become his queen.

But wearing the crown brings with it a new set of dangers. When a ruthless man plies the king’s ear with whispers of genocide, it is up to the young queen to prevent the extermination of the Jews. She must find the strength within to violate the king’s law, risk her life, and save her people.

This is a story of finding hidden depths of courage within one’s self. Of risking it all to stand up for what is right.

This is the story of Queen Esther.
